The Medical University of Bialystok

Activities towards the establishment of  the Medical University of Bialystok were initiated at the beginning of  1949. The Medical University of Bialystok was created by terms of ordinance of the Council of Ministers of 3rd February 1950, with Professor Tadeusz Kielanowski as its first Rector.

The seat of the Medical University of Bialystok is the former Branicki Palace, the most magnificent and precious historic structure in Bialystok from the 18th c. The first basic science  departments were housed in the adjacent Collegium Primum. In the second year of existence the School obtained  the right to confer scientific degrees.  In 1953, first clinical departments were created. In 1954, a new building, Collegium Universum, was opened to house most of the basic science departments. In  1955,  the  academic journal "Annals of the Medical University of Bialystok" was issued for the first time and is still continued.  In 1956, a few issues of "Medyk Bialostocki" were published. The journal was re-issued in 2000. The State Teaching Hospital of the Medical University of  Bialystok was opened in 1962. In 1968, the Division of Dentistry was created within the Faculty of Medicine. In 1977, the Faculty of Pharmacy with the Division of Medical Analytics was opened. In 1982, Collegium Pathologicum was opened. The Children's Teaching Hospital  began admitting patients in 1988. In 1999, Collegium Novum was opened. The Division of Nursing and Health Care was created in the same year. On October 1st 2004,  the Medical Faculty launched medical studies for foreigners, offering a six-year curriculum in the English language.

At first, it provided medical instruction to future doctors, and later, as needs arose, to dentists, pharmacists, nurses and midwives.

At present, the teaching staff of Medical University of Bialystok  consists of 90 professors, 83 associate professors, 516 instructors and research workers. The total number of students exceeds 3700. The medical curriculum has been adapted to meet the standards of the European Union in order to maintain the process of improvement in the quality of teaching. The experienced staff of the University guarantee an adequately high level of theoretical and practical instruction provided in well-equipped lecture halls and  seminar rooms. Two university hospitals with up-to-date diagnostic devices, ensure high level of  bedside teaching.

Medical University of Bialystok gives a range of opportunities for its students. The School offers numerous research programs. Students with special interest in a specific field of medicine have an opportunity to expand their knowledge as members of one of 34 Student Scientific Groups. That makes them more familiar with methodologies of scientific research, and gives them opportunity to participate in national and international scientific conferences.

Students having very good learning achievements can participate in student international exchange in the frame of Socrates-Erasmus programme. 
The graduates of Medical University of Bialystok may further pursue a doctoral degree and postgraduate studies.
The Department of Physical Education gives students the opportunity to develop sport activities, like sailing, table tennis, tennis, athletics, swimming, volleyball, skiing, aerobics, climbing, etc.

* Student enrolment for first-cycle studies of electroradiology and for second-cycle studies of physiotherapy depends on obtaining authorization by Medical University of Bialystok.

Opportunities for foreigners

From academic year 2004/2005  Medical University of Bialystok launched medical studies for foreigners, offering a six-year curriculum in the English language at Medical Faculty, leading to obtain a  M. D. diploma.   The number of foreign students in the academic year 2005/2006 amounts to 58, from Norway, Sweden, Canada, Germany and Aphganistan.

The curriculum comprises of basic sciences (first, second and partially on the third year), and clinical years (partially on the third year, fourth, fifth and sixth year). The total number of obligatory lectures, classes and seminars exceeds 5000 hours.

The academic year starts on October 1st and ends on June 30th. It consists of two semesters: winter semester – lasts from the beginning of October to mid-February and Spring semester – lasts from mid-February to the end of June.
